Winfield Campground near Appling, GA

On June 27th we moved to Winfield Campground, about 175 Miles drive. The campground is located at J. Strom Thurmond Lake and is managed by COE. We had campsite 15 which is located on the late. Having coffee with a nice view in the morning cannot be beat! We only stayed for 3 nights since 4th of July week is approaching and everything is booked out. The first day, Maria went shopping for food and some miscellaneous other items and I did some basic maintenance on Schnitzel (isn’t there always something to tweak or repair on our house?). We had a nice little bike ride within the campground and surrounding area. A visit to Augusta was on our list also, so off we went. Augusta is a smaller town on the Savannah River and we strolled the River Walk which is right next to the Levee that was built since the Savannah River caused some major flooding of the town. The Augusta Museum of History is a worthwhile visit with lots of exhibits of the local history including the story of James Brown who was born in Barnwell not far from Augusta. Golf is the” big thing” in Augusta and there were 3 rooms dedicated to golfing. Also they had a nice transportation section which includes Steam engine #302, one of four Class F63 Mikado type locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Georgia Railroad in 1915. It ran from Augusta to Atlanta and was in service until 1952.

On 6/30 we checked out and headed to our next spot, Cracker Barrel close to Columbia, SC. The drive was not bad, however, on arrival we started up our onboard generator and it would die after 10 minutes. Not good when you want to run the AC in 96degree heat. Also our Refrigerator got temperamental and did not want to run on Propane. Basic troubleshooting did not identify the issue and “panic mode” kicked in. We called some local campgrounds but could not reach anybody since it was 8PM. On a hunch we called the campground we had reservations for July 1 for a week and they had a spot, but it was an additional 110 miles to drive. After an uneventful (Thank you) drive we arrived at that campground after 10PM, got Schnitzel leveled, power hooked up and after a glass of Wine we hit the sack in a nicely cooled Motorhome.
