6/16 – 6/19/2024 – Canyon de Chelly near Chinle, AZ
Wow, what a surprise! We arrived at Canyon de Chelly in late afternoon and set up camp at Cottonwood Campground right next door. The sites are all dry camping (no water, no electricity, no sewer). Next day we drove the north rim road which has some overlooks. What a canyon. The views were astounding . You could see ruins in the cliffs and also active farms at the bottom of the canyon. In the afternoon we went into Chinle do do some grocery shopping. After a very quiet night we headed out to drive the south rim road. Again, the view from the overlooks were breathtaking. Not much hiking can be done and you can only get into the canyon by booking a tour with a Navajo guide. Early afternoon we got back to the campground and hung out. We also met a couple from Germany who are traveling from Canada down to Chile. What a nice surprise. Friday we packed up and headed north to Sleeping Ute Campground in Colorado where we stayed for 2 nights. The campground is next to a Casino where we had lunch one day but did not gamble.Â
6/21 – 6/23/2024 We drove to West Fork Campground. On our drive, we experienced some pretty strong wind which made not too much fun. However, it was nice to see some green grass and real trees after spending nearly 2 month in the deserts of AZ. For the first time since we own the motorhome we had to cross some minor mountain passes which was the testing ground for our Rig. All went well with Schnitzel and SuziQ. The campground is between Pagosa Springs and Creede and off US160. A well maintained dirt/gravel road of about 1.7 miles led us to the campground. We set up, paid our dues to the Camp Host and did very little for two days. We enjoyed the peace and quietness, did some hiking along the dirt road and within the campground . Sunday we packed up and headed to our next destination, Gunnison, CO.
Until next update,
Maria and Bernhard
