Quartzsite, AZ

05/26/2024 – 06/02/2024 This week we are staying at Kofa Mountain RV Park in Quartzsite, AZ close to the California State line. Quartzsite is known as THE place to spend Winter as a RVer. It is a small town during the off season months (late Spring to October) with about 2000 people. In season there are as many as 1.5 million people (Snowbirds) due to a lot of BLM land in the area and a very moderate climate.

During our stay we explored the area by car since the temperatures reached around 100 degrees during the day and it was to hot to do strenuousness stuff.

One day we drove Palm Canyon “Road” in the Kofa National Wildlife Preserve which is part of the Sonora Desert. It ended at the mountain range with a beautiful view of the desert.

We also explored an old Gold mine, Gold Eye Mine, where you can still see some of the shafts they dug and also a cabin. In the cabin are some artifacts from the time the mine was active. Very interesting. The area is accessible via gravel road and seems to be a party area on weekends.  Further down the gravel road we drove a part of the “Oh Shit Run” which, after following for a while lived up to its name and we turned around.

Friday we drove 80 miles south to Yuma and visited the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park. The prison was build in 1876 and housed inmates for 33 years. Lots of history in the Museum with pictures and stories of inmates and guards.
