Today we went to Beaufort, SC and spent some time in the Visitor Center and attached Beaufort History Museum. The museum displays some artifacts like arrowheads from the American Indians, lots of information about Slavery and historic facts from the 1700 to the 2000. Across the street is the Reconstruction Era National Historic Park . The Reconstruction era,1861-1900 the historic period in which the United States grappled with the question of how to integrate millions of newly freed African Americans into social, political, economic, and labor systems, was a time of significant transformation. The people, places, and events in Beaufort County, South Carolina, reflect on the most important issues of this tumultuous time period. From here we walked to the Waterfront Park and Bay Street which has lots of small shops. Next stop was Ft. Fremont on St. Helena Island. This Fort was built in 1899 for the fortification of the coastal area shortly after the Spanish-American War. It was decommissioned and sold at a public auction in 1930.
